Obama and Marketing

I’ll probably write more about this later and i’m sure i’m not the first to go down this road, but as i read this morning about the launch of change.gov and the stats of Obama’s myspace, facebook and the like pages, i’m wondering if we just witnessed the most brilliant marketing campaign in american history.  i voted for our president-elect. i believe he is the best possible choice to lead our country for the next 4 years.  i believe we do need change and i also believe politics are a shady business.  And even as good as the country feels right now, the spark the election of barack obama has ignited, i can’t help but wonder if we as a generation have been duped by our own willingness to latch on to trends or for that matter, if most of us know who, what or why we really voted and voted for.

I want to be perfectly clear again, I voted for Obama.

My point of view on this is not a study in Obama’s policy or his ability to be the next leader of the free world. I’m as sold as I will let myself be on that side of things.

This is a rant on the marketing of the next president.   It’s been discussed in article after article how Obama’s use of technology energized a typically apathetic generation and how it changed the game in political strategy.   Ad Age ran this article during the campaign and it speaks volumes on the issue.  I want to know…. did we the apathetic overcome their apathy or just mask it by following a trend or by buying into a sales ptich?  how much of this played out as Bud Light vs Miller Light?  where do the issues play in all of this? how many of the average 18 - 30 year olds can speak intelligently on the issues or actually stage the position of Obama relevant to the number of people who voted or pledged their support via facebook? Maybe i’m selling myself and my fellow Generation Xrs short?  But again, that’s not the intent of the question.  We just witnessed not only the most historic election of our country’s short history, but also the highest voter turnout. On top of that, Obama raised more money than any candidate in history.  The marketing aspect of it is nothing short of interesting and something i plan on researching more over the next couple of days.  I’m sure there will be numberous books about it, and i’ll be first in line to buy all of them
